Wildlife In Color

The North Woods Country
Roger Tory Peterson |
A gallery of wildlife miniatures was started
in 1938 by the National Wildlife Federation. Each year, thirty-six new paintings of birds,
fish, mammals, flowers, and trees were added to this growing collection which was
published as poster stamps and distributed by the organization to support its work. The
stamps were very popular with many families who loved the outdoors. When the stamps
arrived, enthusiastic children would study them, absorbing all the details.

The pictures --- 453 illustrations in full
color by America's leading wildlife artists --- were collected in one book in 1951. The text was written by Roger Tory Peterson, the creator of
the successful Field Guide to The Birds. |

Walter Weber |
The book is organized by wildlife
communities.
Peterson guides you through the many varied environments across America. This takes a different view than the identification manuals that
group birds, animals, flowers, etc. by their species and similarities. You see the whole
natural world of the specific environments, such as the pine barrens, the beaches, the
swamps, the towns.
Peterson talked of the vast variety. In his words, "A
flight of geese, flowers in a mountain meadow, a scarlet tanager in an oak tree, a deer by
the riverbank --- these are America." |

A primary concern of the Federation has been
to bring to the American people a full knowledge and understanding of our natural
resources. These outdoors advocates have worked hard
promoting conservation and appreciation of the natural world. Citizens have been urged to
guard against the overuse of soil and its erosion; the pollution of waters; and the lack
of planned cutting and reforestation of our timberlands. Our lands and waters are the
foundations of the national wealth; and they urgently require the active and intelligent
attention of all the people. |
