SKF India Ltd was incorporated in 1961 following a collaboration between AB SKF, Associated Bearing Co. Ltd and Investment Corp. of India Ltd. In 1963, SKF set up its first bearing factory in Pune, Maharashtra.

The SKF Group currently consists of approximately 150 companies including

the seal manufacturer Chicago Rawhide.

Since its founding, SKF's company headquarters have been located in Gothenburg. One recent acquisition was that of Economos, part of Salzer Holding, an Austria-based seal company, Jaeger Industrial and ABBA, Taiwanesemanufacturers of linear actuators. The company's clients include General Electric, Rolls-Royce plc and Pratt & Whitney. It also supplies bearings for Ferrari racing vehicles, used in Formula One races,and is a sponsor of F1. Another focus area is the energy sector, including wind turbines which generate electricity.

By 2011, SKF Industrial Market, Regional Sales and Services, made up about 40% of SKF's total sales.

SKF employs 3000 people across six factories in India and has 27% market share of the industrial & automotive bearings market.

SKF is investing SEK 45 million to expand the production capacity of the spherical roller bearing (SRB) plant in Nilai, Malaysia. The investment will further enhance the Group's manufacturing capacity utilization in 2017.

SKF showcase an innovative shock absorber seal system for off-road vehicles such as enduro and cross motorcycles, snowmobiles and quads at EICMA 2016.

SKF announces the consolidation of its manufacturing facilities in North America, including the closure of its sites in San Diego, California and Baltimore, Maryland.

Restructuring costs are expected to amount to around SEK 300 million, of which around SEK 100 million will be accounted for during Q2 2016 and the remainder as they occur. The consolidation is expected to generate full year cost savings of around SEK 220 million from 2019, whereof around SEK 70 million is expected to be achieved in 2018.

By 2015,SKF signs aftermarket partnership agreement with NAPA in Mexico.

In the same year ,SKF has manufactured and supplied its largest ever spherical roller bearing (bore diameter 1,25 metres) to be used within the mining industry. The bearing was manufactured at SKF’s factory in Gothenburg, Sweden.

SKF bearing has secured a three-year contract with Compañia Minera Antamina S.A. (Antamina), to provide Proactive Reliability Maintenance services at the company’s open-pit copper mine in Peru. Antamina is jointly owned by BHP Billiton, Glencore, Teck and Mitsubishi Corporation, who have jointly invested over USD 3.5 billion in the site, making it one of the largest mining investments in Peru’s history.

SKF has launched a ship-based maintenance program based on condition monitoring for Tsakos Colombian Ship Management (TCM), which aims to reduce costs and reduce maintenance effort. This ship-borne maintenance program brings a number of benefits, including early warning of critical mechanical failures and the detection of potential problems in auxiliary machinery.
